Memories of Banana Cream Pie
When you think of banana cream pie, a lot of things come to mind. For me, it is not just the crispy crust and sweet, sweet creaminess, it’s the nostalgia it invokes. A few days ago, I was serving one of our delicious banana cream pies and it got me thinking: I was serving a large party, three generations of the same family, the young quite young, and the old quite old. I thought about my grandmother and her wonderful culinary skills. She was a magnificent baker, cookies and pies were her specialty. My first banana cream pie was on my fifth birthday, she had baked it special just for me because of my affinity for bananas. It was amazing. It blew my mind, I was forever altered. Every time this pie comes up it brings me back to that day. As for this family, I watched as the children took their first bites of our pie, and their reaction was similar to mine: joy. Even though this pie wasn’t served by their grandmother, I believe it was as good an introduction to this miracle in pie form as they could have at a restaurant. I was proud, and I ordered myself a pie for dinner.
